gayle hawes

"the air is filled with tenuous strings in chords prolonged as sighs of mourning. at a rhythmic yet morose pace this music reaches its ecstatic moment and ends almost as abruptly as a somber question."

the above paragraph tries to describe the only piece of music written by composer gayle hawes (1892-1973) of which there exist more than 14,000 versions. as a teenager, hawes hummed a blurred melody and decided to take music lessons in order to capture it accurately. during teh seven remaining decades of her life, she used 950 notebooks to render those slight alterations of the same piece. before she died at age 81, hawes left a last score and a note, "its over."
