over the summer i made an artwork in upstate new york. i called it a "site specific" piece b/c it was made for a location, and couldn't be moved or else it would become a lie.

the piece was a photograph of me pointing to a spot on the map. the spot was the antipode (the other side of the world) from where the photograph is displayed. so, when a viewer looks at it, they see the location of the other side of the world. and with the piece, is a pile of photocopied directions that people can take, which is literally step by step how to get to the otherside of the world. so, there is the possibility of someone just walking away from the photograph and going to this point, the farthest place they can get to (before getting closer to where they started). it is this possibility that is presented.

i remade the piece for a gallery in chinatown in los angeles. it was in an exhibit sept/oct.

i just read about a show in a gallery around the corner that was oct/nov.

for that show the artist went to the farthest place she could get to, the antipode...

and since the gallery was literally across the street, she must have followed my exact directions.

did she see my piece and then go?
or is it just in the air?

Are there really zombies in Haiti? Wade Davis devotes two long sections to this question. He first looks at the popular views and then explores cases where there have been some attempts to carefully and more scientifically determine the status of suspected cases. His key candidate for zombiehood is Clairvius Narcisse. In spring, 1962 Narcisse "died" at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Deschapelles, Haiti. His death was verified by the hospital staff. 18 years later Narcisse turned up alive and well, and claimed to be an escaped zombie.

2pm--3pm: take an Afro-Haitian drum lesson.

6:30pm--7:3opm: help my teacher play an Afro-Haitian dance class.

9:30pm--midnight: work on composing a piece for the Arctic Ocean.


I was actually up much earlier than 9:40. Where does the time go?
